For the last 7 years bi-monthly wine magazine “Winestate” has held what it calls “The World’s Greatest Shiraz Challenge”, attracting entries from Australia, New Zealand, France and Chile. Results are published in the September / October issue of the magazine.

Last year we were very proud of the 2009 Shingleback Unedited Shiraz being ranked 10th from 657 entries. This year, we’ve gone that step further – Shingleback’s 2009 D Block Reserve Shiraz placed 7th of 742 entries – the only McLaren Vale wine listed in the Top 10.

The judges said:

“A powerful, rich and meaty wine - a real stand-out! Dense and inky in colour, with excellent balance between the lovely dark, licoricey fruit and the long, gritty tannins. Has interesting complexity. 5 stars.”

The annual Hong Kong Australia Business Association Awards, SA Chapter, were held on August 10th at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. We were delighted to again be invited to be the sole wine sponsor, with the 300 guests enjoying a selection of Shingleback wines to accompany a delicious 3 course dinner. For the 5th consecutive year, Shingleback is a Festival Supporterof Odyssey, the 7th annual Adelaide Hellenic Cultural Festival, where the best of Greek culture will again be on display. Events run from September 22 - October 13 and include dance, art and music, with the Greek Film Festival now standing alone from November 1 - 4.

“Shingleback has been a success story since its establishment in 1995. Originally focused on export, as times have changed, so has its focus. Its 100ha of estate vineyards are one of the keys to that success, winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy 06 for its 05 D Block Cabernet Sauvignon another. The well-made wines are rich and full-flavoured, but not overripe (and, hence, not excessively alcoholic).”

McLaren Vale Scarce Earth project is a celebration of McLaren Vale's best Shiraz vineyards reaching their full expression through single block wines. The 2010 wines are carefully selected by a panel to ensure they reflect their sense of place and express their true fruit characters.

McLaren Vale Scarce Earth explores the geological, climatic and soil diversity of the region. All wines come from a single block, a small plot of land with a unique flavour profile and personality.

This project gives wine lovers at all levels the opportunity to explore the influence of site and the chance to taste some of the region’s best Shiraz vineyards.

Once again Shingleback entered a number of wines in the 2 major European wine shows and we were rewarded with a number of medals. From 9 entries in the Viennese International Wine Challenge, 6 Gold & 3 Silver medals - most  pleasing were Golds for both the 2010 Red Knot Shiraz & Cabernet - a great endorsement  for readily available wines that are often priced at aound the $10 - $12.00 mark! Our success also continued in Germany, at the annual Mundus Vini Wine Awards - 2 Golds & 3 Silvers. The 2009 Shingleback reds are just spectacular!

Once again, Shingleback is delighted to be invited to participate in the G'day USA programme, which is now arguably the largest single foreign country promotion held annually in the USA. G'Day USA is an fortnight of events designed to showcase Australian business capabilities in the US. It is a bi-coastal celebration with top Aussie celebrities, film makers, chefs and politicians taking part.

Shingleback is once again being poured at the LA Black Tie Gala and we are very excited to be the exclusive winery to be represented at the inaugural Boston Black Tie Dinner on Australia Day, January 26th.
