2012 Shingleback Davey Estate Reserve Shiraz

Shiraz

"And yet another cracking Shiraz from this renowned region, a captivating mix of aromas that spin a web around the core of ripe, dark fruits with crumbled earthy tones underneath and highlights of pretty herbs, spices and florals. Then right through the middle its dense, dark chocolate mouthfeel ploughs ahead, gathering all the finer points on the way. It all works a treat for a very attractive price. 94 pts."

Tony Love, The Advertiser Top 100 Wines, July 18th 2015

"Has the savoury, earthy, almost dusty edge that can be found from McLaren Vale Shiraz - smells rich in forest berries, cedar and licorice but shows a fresher, brighter fruit profile to taste. Good length, finds a balance in fruit, oak and acidity, finishes with a lick of sweetness and saltiness. Nice expression. 92 pts."

Mike Bennie, Wine Business Magazine, November 2014

"Hefty McLaren Vale Shiraz, at a reasonable price. This is good. Old school to an extent but generally well-balanced. It serves blackberry, chocolate, coffee grounds and sweet, liquorice flavours - and lots of them. Tannin is dry and grainy. It's a grunty wine, a powerful one and offers good value. 92+ pts."

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, November 2014

"This is good, consistent drinking. It's from McLaren Vale & has a backbone of blackberry & dark cherry fruit, with some blueberry softness, a touch of chocolate complexity and a hint of spice on the finish. This is over-delivering for the price & well worth seeking out."

Rick Allen, Manley Daily, November 21st 2014

"The point of establishing a brand is to give confidence to the consumer that the product they are buying is consistently of quality. Looked at from one angle that could equate to boring. I’m not sure how many vintages of this wine I have tasted but I do know each and every one has consistently of quality and it’s never boring 94 points and very good value at $24 or below"

Tony Keys, The Key Report, October 17th 2014

"Estate grown, small batch open-fermented, and matured for 14 months in American and French oak. Deeply coloured; black fruits, spice, licorice and dark chocolate all leap out of the glass on the bouquet, and the medium - full bodied palate provides more of the same in a wanton display of rich flavours; very soft tannin means drink soon is an alternative option to cellaring. Drink by 2022. 92 pts."

"Very deep purple in color, the 2012 Davey Estate Shiraz reveals a nose of blackberry and black cherry compote highlighted by hints of blueberry preserve, Chinese five spice, incense and smoky bacon. Full-bodied and packed with blackberry and Asian spice flavors, it is seamlessly structured with medium - firm, rounded tannins and just enough acidity to lift through the finish with very good length. Drink now to 2020+. 91+ pts."

Lisa Perotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate #211, February 2014

Tasting Note:

Wow! Vibrant pigeon-blood ruby in colour. Fresh blackberry aromas are entwined with hints of espresso, roses, spice and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, with a luscious dark berry mid-palate; seamlessly structured with fine but firm tannins and a balanced acidity that ensures a long, lingering finish.
